Hunter Sports High School Gymnasium

The project: Located in Gateshead NSW, Hunter Sports High School is dedicated to balancing academic excellence with sporting achievement. As the only designated sports high school north of Sydney, HSHS required professional standard sporting facilities – and in July 2014, the school was allocated $20 million by the NSW State Government to bring existing infrastructure up to desired standards.

The challenge: Artel was engaged to design and construct a state-of-the-art gymnasium covering 1200m2. This involved upgrading existing facilities, but also constructing a new building that would cater to the school’s diverse requirements.

The scope: Working together with Hunter Sports High and the NSW State Government, Artel designed a new building that is flexible enough to be used by students participating in all sorts of school activities, from sports to visual performances. In addition to upgrading three existing undercover basketball courts, Artel constructed a new building featuring a double multipurpose sports court with motorised dividing curtain, 120-seat concrete mezzanine, weights room, fitness lab, seminar room, change rooms, Physiotherapy clinic and dedicated sports staff room.

The school’s energy and water usage was also taken into account as part of the final solution. As well as undertaking a major energy substation upgrade, Artel integrated a 100,000L underground rainwater harvesting tank into the building design – which uses UV water sanitising to process water for re-use in the building and surrounding landscaped gardens.

The result: Completed in just 14 months, the new gymnasium has given HSHS a training facility that’s on par with the excellent education they provide – and a visual embodiment of their commitment to supporting Australia’s next generation of sporting superstars.
